Simple percentage calculation

Beginner

In this exercise, you're making a budget. When you build a budget, it’s helpful to see how big each department is compared to the total. A percentage-of-total view makes that quick to understand.

In this sheet, each department’s annual budget is listed in cells B2:B6.

What you need to do

  1. Click cell B8.
  2. Calculate the total budget by summing the values in B2:B6.
  3. Click cell C2.
  4. Calculate Marketing’s share of the total by dividing the budget in B2 by the total budget in B8.
  5. Copy your formula down from C2 through C6 to calculate the percentage for the other departments.

When you’re done, column C should show each department’s budget as a percentage of the total.

Need some help?

Hint 1

Start by calculating the total in B8 with SUM, using the range B2:B6.

Hint 2

Each percentage in column C is: department budget ÷ total budget. The total budget cell is B8.

Hint 3

If you copy the formula down and the reference to the total changes, make B8 an absolute reference (use $ signs).
